“The Bund of Shanghai in 1930” postcard

The Shanghai Bund in 1930: Commerce and Competition By 1930, Shanghai had become not only China’s economic and financial hub but also a battleground for global commercial powers. The Bund was already hosting intense business competition across various industries including real estate, finance, trust businesses, and shipping. At this time, Shanghai’s Bund had already begun…

Description

Do you know how Shanghai opened up?
Over 100 years ago, a war that changed Chinese history—the Opium War—caused a major shift in the Qing Dynasty’s foreign policies. After their defeat, the Qing government was forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing with Britain, and Shanghai became one of five ports that had to be opened, starting foreign trade.

How Did the Bund Come About?
Although the Qing government lost the war, local officials in Shanghai were not welcoming to foreigners living within the city. The first British consul and his entourage, upon arriving in Shanghai, were constantly surrounded by curious locals, becoming a sort of “novelty.” This part of history seems quite amusing today. After a thorough review of historical records, CardMails brings this fascinating story back to life.

The Origins of the Bund
At that time, Shanghai’s county town wasn’t accustomed to foreign cultures. The British consul’s accommodation in Shanghai was not ideal. After some searching, he found a piece of farmland near the river and negotiated with local Shanghai officials to lease the land. This land became what we now know as the Shanghai Bund.

How Funny Was the British Lease Deal?
The British consul paid 17,000 taels of silver to lease the land, but he was unable to get full reimbursement from the British government. In the end, he had to cover 4,000 taels of silver out of his own pocket. This “lease fee” now appears to be a small episode in the international negotiations of the time.
